Science 'not for normal people' Full Story
I came across this when I was working as my university's open day guide, when I realized the majority of the wanna-be students were interested in psychology, which the department was regertfully located at the farthest edge of the campus. After getting fed up with walking back and forth over and over, I asked a visitor why there is such a big interest in psychology. Her resopnd was simply "... you know, science is boring...". This is while organizations such as National Centre for Biotechnology Education are trying to turn the boring thing more attractive to the school pupils. Either this happens because teachers are selected from graduates with less talents (namely talented graduates do not become teachers), or teaching is a less rewarding career, or both, can be subject to case by case study. Fortunately students in developing countries still have a tendency for science, in which later decilne is a distinct possibility. Before this happens, a big effort is needed to dramatize scientific concept and demonstrate how they are involved in daily life, and convince children that making contribution to it is not that big deal.

با درود و احترام ، بی مناسبت ندانستم مطلب زیر را از مقدمه ی کتاب Positive Economics نوشته ی پروفسور Lipsey نقل کنم :

Scientific Attitude in Everyday Life

It is often said that we live in a scientific age . Over the last several hundred years the citizens of most western countries have enjoyed the fruits of innumerable scientific discoveries . But the scientific advances that have so profoundly affected the average citizen , have been made by an extremely small minority of the population . These advanced have been accepted by most people without the slightest idea either of the technical nature of the discoveries involved , or of the attitude of mind that made them possible . If we take as a measure of the influence of science the degree of dissemination of the fruits of science , then we live in a profoundly scientific age , but if we take as our measure the degree to which the general public understands and practices the scientific approach , then we are definitely in a pre -scientific era . Indeed the scientific method of answering questions by appealing to a carefully collected and coordinated body of facts is a method that is seldom adopted by the public
