Iran Bars National Geographic Over Map DisputeFull Story
Still a weak response. Both the Reuters reporter and National Geographic cartographer are defending the Arabic nations' "right" over this nomenculture system, I just wonder why nobody applies this to Indian Ocean. Although a name is just a name, all in all, but it looks the real aim is opening a claim over the ownership of the three Iranian islands (Abu-Moosa and the Tunbs). Usually these kind of activities start to warm up whenever Iran is not in a stable political status (I have a vague memory of the attempt for renaming Persian Gulf sometime in 1980s during Iran-Iraq war, however I can be worng). I don't see any chance for Arabic nations to succeed changing the name officially -the historical facts against their claim is strong and clear- but it's a good way to stretch Iran's nerve when already glued to more important battlefield, the nuclear plan issue. There is one thing I'm really confused about: There are lots issues that can make Iranian officials nervous: Nuclear program in the top, the three islands in Persian Gulf, the Iranian-Canadian reporter story, Human rights, and many more. Why they are always rasied up one or two at a time, and never all together?
