Making the industrial-scale agriculture profitable has always been a challenge, some historians even postulate it to be the core motive behind the US Civil war in the 1860s. Agricultural machinery remedied that in the absence of affordable labor force, and with new economic bottlenecks showing up, the automation is expanding even more. Fewer people are involved in the food production process, aiming to produce food for more people. The science and technology involved are appealing, but I doubt this cycle can continue for long...
